Norfolk Southern Corporation, one of the nation’s premier transportation companies with its Norfolk Southern Railway subsidiary operating approximately 20,000 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, has long since had sustainability and environmental stewardship as part of the culture of Norfolk Southern. As part of this culture, they have a five-year initiative to reduce carbon emissions per revenue ton-mile by 10 percent. In addition to lowering their locomotive fuel burn, they are increasing the energy efficiency of railroad facilities all across their system. MCI has had the privilege of working with Norfolk Southern to assist them in reaching their corporate goals through the following projects:
- Provided an Energy Star Certification program for their Norfolk and Roanoke, Virginia headquarter buildings totaling 550,000+ sf. of Class A office space.
- Provide a Level II Energy Audit program to include assessment of current equipment, applications, and operations of the facilities. Recommendations for energy conservation measures, to include economic estimates & projections, energy modeling, and budget for potential projects.
- Provide and install electrical smart meters for monitoring & trending main building feeds and report via BACnet IP communications.
- Provide engineering services for investigation and identification of energy conservation measures and engineering best practices for facilities where equipment is aging and replacement/retrofit is necessary.
